Giant Sand es una banda de Tucson formada hacia 1980, y ha editado más de 20 álbumes desde 1985. Es una de las mejores y más interesantes bandas de rock alternativo de los últimos 20 años. Prácticamente es una banda de un solo miembro, Howe Gelb, apoyado por una serie de grandes músicos. Neil Young y Bob Dylan (y The Band) son claras influencias (de hecho, Giant Sand es el nombre de un tema de Dylan), pero el estilo fronterizo de Howe Gelb está abierto a docenas de influencias y experimentaciones. No satisfecho con una discografía tan prolífica, Gelb tiene una carrera paralela en solitario, y Giant Sand adoptaron un pseudónimo para sus álbumes country: The Band of... Blacky Ranchette. Joey Burns y el sensacional batería John Convertino formaron además su propia (y más exitosa) banda, Calexico. Otra banda relacionada son Friends of Dean Martinez, también con Convertino.

Una banda esencial y prácticamente desconocida. Muy recomendable, como demuestra esta canción de su gran álbum Swerve (muy difícil, si no imposible, de encontrar hoy en día).

Giant Sand is a band from Tucson formed around 1980, and has released more than 20 albums since 1985. It's one of the best and more interesting alternative rock bands of the last 20 years. It's almost a one-man band, Howe Gelb, backed by great players. Neil Young and Bob Dylan (and The Band) are clear influences (in fact, Giand Sand is the title of one Dylan song), but Howe Gelb bordering style is open to dozens of inspirations and experimentations. Not satisfied with such a prolific discography, Gelb has also a parallel solo career, and Giant Sand had also a pseudonym for country albums: The Band of... Blacky Ranchette. Joey Burns and the superb drummer John Convertino also made their own and more successful band Calexico. Other related band are Friends of Dean Martinez, also with Convertino.

An essential and (almost) unknown band. Highly recommended, as this song proves, from the great Swerve album (very difficult, if not impossible, to find nowadays).

1986 - GIL EVANS - Better Git It in Your Soul (The Hot and the Cool)

Gil Evans es un legendario orquestador y arreglista de la historia del jazz. En la década de los 50 arregló y orquestó unas cuantas obras maestras del género: los álbumes Porgy and Bess, Sketches of Spain y Miles Ahead de Miles Davis, Dream of You de Helen Merrill o su propio y glorioso Great Jazz Standards.

Antes de su muerte, Evans (con 74 años) grabó unos cuantos temas para la excelente banda sonora de Absolute Beginners (Principiantes, Julien Temple, 1986), y también se encargó de los arreglos de viento para los estupendos temas That's Motivation de David Bowie, Have You Ever Had It Blue de The Style Council o Killer Blow de Sade.

Esta es una pequeña joya (2 min.) de la banda sonora, originalmente compuesta y registrada por el gran Charles Mingus. Atención a la batería.

Before his death Evans (74 years old) recorded a few numbers for the excellent Absolute Beginners (Julien Temple, 1986) soundtrack, and also made the brass arrangements for the great David Bowie's Thats Motivation , The Style Council's Have You Ever Had It Blue or Sade's Killer Blow .

This is a little (2 min.) gem from the soundtrack, originally composed and recorded by the great Charles Mingus. Pay attention to the drums.

1973 - JOHN LENNON - Tight A$

Este es un buen rock'n'roll de Lennon, incluído en el estupendo y muy infravalorado álbum Mind Games.

Desde el año 2000, Yoko Ono (como supervisora) está no sólo remasterizando, sino remezclando casi toda la obra de Lennon. El objetivo de estas remezclas es conseguir una importante mejora de la calidad de sonido, que con una simple remasterización sería imposible. Estas maravillosas remezclas son totalmente fieles a las mezclas originales, y la calidad de sonido es infinitamente mayor.

No obstante, esta es la mezcla original de Tight A$, actualmente no disponible y probablemente descatalogada de por vida, ya que no hay ninguna razón comercial para que las versiones originales de sus álbumes sigan editándose.

This is a good Lennon rock'n'roll number, from the great and very underrated Mind Games album.

Since 2000, Yoko Ono (as supervisor) is not only remastering, but also remixing almost the whole Lennon catalogue. The objective of these remixes is to achieve a major improvement on the sound quality, which would be impossible with a simple remaster. These marvelous remixes are totally faithful to the original mixes, and the sound quality is immensely higher.

However this is the original mix of Tight A$, currently not available and probably unlisted forever, since there are no commercial reasons to release the albums original versions.

1961 - TONY SHERIDAN - WHY (CAN'T YOU LOVE ME AGAIN) [Original Stereo Mix]

En junio de 1961, los Beatles estaban en Hamburgo grabando unas canciones como músicos de estudio para Tony Sheridan. También grabaron sus dos primeras canciones en un estudio profesional: Ain't She Sweet y Cry For a Shadow. De las cuatro que grabaron con Sheridan destaca Why.

La canción no fue publicada hasta 1963, cuando los Beatles ya eran más que famosos.

Ésta es la mezcla original en Stereo (puesta a la venta ya en 1964), y está incluída en el CD The Early Tapes of The Beatles.

In June 1961, The Beatles were in Hamburg recording a few songs as the Tony Sheridan studio musicians. They also recorded their first two songs on a professional studio: Ain't She Sweet & Cry For a Shadow. Among the four which they recorded with Sheridan, Why is a highlight.

The song wasn't released until 1963, when The Beatles were more than famous.

This is the original Stereo mix (released in 1964), and it's included on The Early Tapes of The Beatles CD.
